This system enables hands-free operation of any Windows or Macintosh computer, and can be used for environmental control and infrared-based remote control. It provides the user with a voice using text-to-speech technology, with customizable phrase boards and word prediction. Symbolic communication is also offered. The system uses a camera and infrared light to track effects of the user's eye. As the user looks at the computer screen, the system translates the user's eye movement into cursor movement, moving the computer's cursor to exactly where the user is looking. The device is placed from 7" to 12.5" in front of the user's eye. The user then selects letters, numbers or commands by gazing at the appropriate positions on the face of the EyeTyper. A small moving camera inside the EyeTyper tracks the user's eye movement. Text the user composes is displayed on a 40-character LCD display and spoken by a built-in speech synthesizer. The EyeTyper comes programmed for the alphabet and other standard keyboard characters. Custom vocabulary can be programmed by the user with the eyes, from an external keyboard, or by loading it from an Apple or IBM computer. The EyeTyper Model 300 supersedes the earlier Model 200, operating at four times the speed and permitting a greater range of head motion (in and out 5.5", left to right 4", and up and down 3"). Options include a printer, an external display, and an external keyboard for programming vocabulary. This communicator can digitally record up to 16 minutes of messages at one to 16 keypad locations (up to two minutes per location). The device has three alternative selection modes for recorded messages: direct selection using the keypad, direct selection using up to four external switches, or scanning with one or two switches. Scanning modes include single switch automatic scanning, single switch inverse scanning, two-switch inverse scanning, two-switch step scanning, or cued auditory scanning.
