APOLLO
--- DISCONTINUED. RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. --- One pound external speech synthesizer that interfaces with an IBM compatible computer via the serial port; special cable available for parallel interface. Comes with own screen review program, "HAL" and also works with IBM's screen reader. Does not use a speech chip that is programmed with phonetic rules, but a digital signal processor (which uses a mathematical model of sound qualities of the throat and tongue to produce speech). High quality speech like when getting a number through Directory Assistance. It has only one external control, a switch that is both the on/off and volume control. All other features are controlled by the screen review program being used: HAL, Screen Reader or some other program. User controls are 16 speech rates, pitch, prosody or inflection, and inter-word and phrase pause length. These pause options result in either slow halting speech or smooth faster pace. Other options are; spell mode, punctuation on or off, and Hyper mode (only key words are spoken). HAL is controlled with ALt. and function keys. It has the usual interactive and review modes and speaks on character and word level, but not on sentence or paragraph level. Ten windows can be defined. Background and foreground colors and screen attributes are identifiable. Measures 4 inches wide by 7 1/2 inches long by1 1/4 inches in front and 2 1/4 inches in back. Can use either an AC adapter or internal, permanently soldered Nicad batteries. Battery life is six to eight hours. Batteries are recharged when synthesizer is plugged into AC outlet.

EGA SOFT WINDOW

The program allows a range of font sizes from 5 standard characters high to one-third of screen height; up to three lines of text at a time may be displayed, depending on font size. The full 25 lines of 80 characters of standard text are displayed at the top of the screen, and the enlarged characters are displayed at the bottom of the screen; the user may select which lines are to be enlarged.
