HANDBIKE
--- DISCONTINUED. (Verified 03/2007) RETAINED IN DATABASEW FOR REFERENCE. --- The HandBike is a two-wheeled hand propelled cycle that also functions as a four-wheel cycle due to two caster-type side wheels that fold down and lock beneath the seat for added stability when the user stops or transfers. This cycle features reverse movement for backing up, thereby increasing its maneuverability. FRAME: The frame is made of chrome moly tubing. Overall cycle dimensions are 22 x 64 inches (WxL). The frame is powdercoat painted with metallic paint and clearcoated. SEAT: The recumbent style seat is a tubular frame with stretched nylon webbing that creates a seat, seat back, and full extended-leg legrest. The user's legs rest on either side of the crankshaft and can be secured with nylon webbing leg restraints with hook and loop closure. The seat adjusts to accommodate a wide range of body sizes. Seat height is 18 inches. POWER INPUT: Parallel hand pedal configuration that allows for safer and more efficient propulsion. (This configuration results in a rowing motion rather than the reciprocal pedal motion of opposed hand pedals.) The hand grips are vertical. The handcrank tower has a quick-release mechanism, allowing it to fold for transport or storage. The cycle can be hand pedalled backwards or forwards. WHEELS: Front and rear wheels have stainless steel spoked rims with 20-inch high pressure Haro tires. The front hub features a Sachs Orbit two speed with 7-cog freewheel. The rear hub is a Sachs sealed mechanism, quick-release. The two side wheels are poly 5 x 1 inch casters with sealed ball bearings. Wheel locks are standard. The wheelbase is 41 inches. GEARING: 14-speed wide range gears with index shifting and a neutral gear for shifting when stopped. BRAKES: The cycle's front brake is activated by cranking backwards. Steering and braking are accomplished without removing the hands from the cranks. A Suntour XCD low profile cantilever rear brake is also featured, and a parking brake operates independently on the rear wheel. SAFETY FEATURES: Seat belt, safety flag and reflectors on the front and rear of the frame and the wheels. ACCESSORIES/OPTIONS: Three water bottle mounts are integrated into the frame and are standard equipment. Available options include a cycle computer, lighting (head light and flashing rear light), crutch carrier, shoulder belts, panier racks for touring, and fenders. WEIGHT: 38 pounds.
