The Bookworm is a portable braille reader designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. The size of a portable cassette player, this device enables all kinds of electronic text (e.g., from the Internet, diskette, e-mail, CD-Rom, etc.) to be stored and read on eight concave, built-in Braille elements. The unit stores four megabytes of information (the equivalent of approximately 4,000 print pages or approximately 50 Braille binders) and operates with four buttons (forward, backward, escape, and menu). The user can choose to read text in automatic scroll mode or to move text manually. While reading, bookmarks can be set at any position and turning off the device with the slider stores the reading position within the text. When text is downloaded, the Bookworm automatically generates a table of contents and a jump function enables the reader to jump from block to block, page to page, or chapter to chapter. This device can also be used as a miniature Braille display for a computer and it includes a clock and alarm function. The unit includes a carrying case and a download program and cable. POWER: Uses rechargeable batteries; the batteries and charger are included. The batteries provide approximately 20 hours of power per charge and the maximum charging time is three hours.
