INTERPRETYPE
Interpretype, also known as ITY, is a communication aid designed for use by individuals with speech disabilities or who are deaf or hard of hearing. This communication aid consists of a pre-programmed laptop style computer unit that can display typed messages and send them to other devices or to a computer. Users can have a conversation by reading and typing. Each individual unit is configured to communicate directly with any personal computer with Windows utilizing Interpretype software. This allows each unit to become a computer peripheral device for communicating with the user of any workstation. The system also gives the user the ability to capture and print conversations if desired. Each unit is smaller than a standard laptop computer but has a full- sized keyboard for speed and accuracy in typing. The screen is relatively small and has a low profile that enables users to maintain eye contact. Interpretype also provides real-time interpreting services over the internet. All ITY Computers are equipped with video cameras and sound cards, allowing connections for Video Relay Service (VRS), Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) and remote Over the Phone Interpreting (OPI) for foreign languages. Users can also communicate from English to any of over 240 languages using a remote OPI interpreter and Interpretype’s USB telephones. Devices are sold singly or in pairs, and come with display materials that businesses can use to advertise the fact that they have this device for use with deaf customers. Cables, a user's manual, and a carrying case are also included. POWER: Uses adapter or rechargeable batteries (included). OPTIONS: French or Spanish translation module.
