ERICA SYSTEM
-- DISCONTINUED. VERIFIED 7/2012. RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. -- The Erica (Eye-gaze Response Interface Computer Aid) Standard System is an eye-controlled communication, computer input, and environmental control system designed for use by individuals with spinal cord injury or neurological, upper extremity, or severe physical disabilities. This system enables hands-free operation of any Windows or Macintosh computer, and can be used for environmental control and infrared-based remote control. It provides the user with a voice using text-to-speech technology, with customizable phrase boards and word prediction. Symbolic communication is also offered. The system uses a camera and infrared light to track effects of the user's eye. As the user looks at the computer screen, the system translates the user's eye movement into cursor movement, moving the computer's cursor to exactly where the user is looking. Eye-controlled zooming technology provides access to mouse functions such as clicking and dragging. Mouse actions can be performed by staring, blinking, speaking commands, or selecting a key or switch. Using the eyes, the user can surf the Internet, compose e-mails, play computer games; communicate through a synthetic voice; or control home environmental elements such as lights, television, or DVD players. This system can also be operated using a touch screen, switch input, or head controls. The system includes software loaded on either a tablet PC using a Windows XP operating system or an iMac using a Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) operating system, a transflective touch screen, a stand, and a camera attachment. Free lifetime technical service and free software upgrades are also included. OPTIONS: An eye-tracking camera and software are available separately for installation on an existing Windows or Macintosh based computer. DIMENSIONS: The touch screen is 12.1 inches.
Notes: This system may also be rented from the manufacturer for a monthly charge. ** This system is available as a dedicated system that meets the requirements for a Dedicated Communication Device as specified by Medicare.
