SCREEN ROVER
--- DISCONTINUED. (Verified 04/2007) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. --- Screen Rover is a voice output motorized mouse designed to provide tactile and verbal access to the personal computer screen for individuals who are blind or have low vision. The user places a hand on the mouse, and Screen Rover moves the mouse, with the user's hand on it, so that the cursor points to the active part of the screen. At the same time, Screen Rover provides a verbal description of the dialog box or menu to which the cursor is pointing, allowing the blind computer user to point and click on the screen as a sighted computer user does with a regular mouse. By generating a variety of push-pull effects to distinguish icons, controls, and text, Screen Rover allows the blind user to learn the layout of the computer screen by feel. Screen Rover distinguishes multiple windows and frames on web sites, and reads any text on the screen, including tool tips and the Windows clock and date. By providing tactile access to the screen, Screen Rover makes it possible for blind computer users to format documents in programs such as Word and to position and size .jpg graphic files and bitmaps. The user can move from the mouse to the keyboard as often as desired, and Screen Rover's tactile feedback can be adjusted to the desired strength. The device operates with only three buttons, uses less hard drive space than conventional screen reader programs, and does not require upgrading every time a new operating system is released. COMPATIBILITY: For use on IBM and compatible computers. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Windows 95/98, Pentium 133 megahertz (MHz) with one available ISA slot, 16 megabytes (MB) of random access memory (RAM), 16-bit sound card, three-button ergonomic mouse, and 2222 dots per inch (dpi) screen resolution.
