Picture of PALMTOP PORTABLE IMPACT --- DISCONTINUED. (Verified 04/2007) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. --- The Palmtop Portable IMPACT is a palmtop computer based direct selection communicator designed for use by individuals with communication disabilities. This device features a 240 x 320 pixel touchscreen to enable users to select symbols, letters, or phrases which trigger messages spoken through DECtalk (see also separate entry) software speech synthesis or digitized speech. Other features include a variety of onscreen keyboards for text-based message production, word prediction, abbreviation expansion, auto capitalization, and auto-spacing. Symbol pages, which can be customized on the device and arranged in an arbitrary hierarchical order, enable users with poor or underdeveloped spelling skills to select words associated with pictures. The optional Mayer-Johnson symbol package provides access to more than 4,000 symbols. Selection of onscreen elements can be accomplished with the touchscreen (with optional dwell selection), through an external keyboard (not included), or through single- or dual-switch scanning. For users with visual impairments or with difficulty making accurate selections from the screen, a visual magnification mode zooms in on the area touched. For those with tremors and motor control disabilities, a set of filtering options can remove unwanted inputs. Many features, such as word prediction, scanning, zoom mode, input filters, and synthesized speech can be customized using a series of dialog boxes. This system includes the IMPACT, a carrying case, a docking cradle, and an amplified speaker. The IMPACT includes Compact Flash, Infrared, serial, and headphone ports. POWER: Uses the included rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for six to ten hours of operation. Recharging requires four hours. OPTIONS: External keyboard, switch interface adapter, and a Mayer-Johnson symbol package. DIMENSIONS: 5.1 x 3.3 x 0.8 inches. WEIGHT: 0.6 pound without the case and speaker.

Notes: DECtalk is a trademark.
