RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. --- The Vario 40, also sold under the names RBT 40 or Rabbit, is a refreshable braille display designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This portable 40-cell braille display unit is designed to work with standard desktop and laptop PC systems. It includes an expansion chasis with a storage drawer which enables a computer keyboard or laptop to rest directly on the braille display unit. The unit can also be reversed to enable the braille display to be placed directly in front of the keyboard or laptop. When reversed, the back of the unit serves as a palm rest. The press of a button inverts the braille, enabling it to be read normally from either direction. The unit's user interface consists of six function buttons arranged in a vertical row of three buttons at each end of the display; pressing combinations of buttons enters commands. Multiple protocols enable this device to be used with a variety of screen reading programs and protocols can be updated to account for software upgrades. This unit connects to a computer through a serial port and provides standard serial output. Parallel connection is available through an optional adapter (not included).
