First National Video Relay Service Debuts for Deaf; CSD Partners with Sprint for Web-Based Assistive Technology

By PR Newswire,
Publication Date: May 2002

Article discussing the USA Video Relay Service (VRS) from Sprint, which is the first nationwide video relay service for people who are deaf and hard of hearing. The USA VRS provides users with the ability to use American Sign Language in visual conversations over advanced telephone networks. The program is web-based, and is utilized through either special phone terminals or personal computers with high-speed Internet connections and the Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser. The USA VRS allows callers to use American Sign Language to converse with a Video Interpreter via video link. The interpreter then translates the signs into speech for standard voice users, or presents the conversation in text format.
