Strategies for the Reluctant Writer

By Richards, Regina G.; LD Online,
Publication Date: February 2002

Article discussing strategies instructors can use to help improve students’ writing skills, and recommends software programs such as Franklin Language Master and Dragon Naturally Speaking 13 to assist with the writing process. The Franklin Language Master is a voice-output spelling program, which features optimal speech clarity, and the option to use a large font size. The program allows students to match the phonetic spelling of a word to the traditional spelling. The use of a speaking component provides multisensory input and helps decrease the student's confusion in reading similar looking words. The process of decision-making helps reinforce the correct spelling of the word. Dragon Naturally Speaking 13 can be especially helpful within the writing process for students who have difficulty with the mechanical aspects of writing and written expression. To use Naturally Speaking 13, students are recommended to understand the subject matter prior to use, and to state phrases and sentences fairly fluently to maximize their use of the program.
