PAC Mate – A Handheld Computer for Blind and Low Vision Users

Article describes PAC Mate, from Freedom Scientific and Microsoft Corporation, which is a personal digital assistant for people who are blind or have low vision. There are two versions of the PAC Mate: (1) the BNS version, which uses an eight-dot Braille keyboard, and (2) the TNS version, which uses a standard QWERTY keyboard. The PAC Mate offers access to documents and web content through Windows CE and JAWS screen reader speech technology. The author contends that the PAC Mate is an excellent product with benefits for people who are blind, visually impaired, and have learning disabilities in academic or educational environments.
