Assistive Technology Notes - Livestock Guards

By Agrability Quarterly, Vol. 3, No. 2
Publication Date: Winter 2002

Article describes livestock gates for farmers or ranchers with dexterity/strength or mobility disabilities. A gate that easily latches, opens, and closes, or a gate that swings freely or is automatically opened and closed could be beneficial. A free swinging or automatic gate would allow a farmer/rancher to drive their truck or tractor through the gate without having to get out of his or her vehicle. Three examples of livestock gates are pictured: (1) a standard “pipe” livestock gait with a wrapped chain latch, (2) a drive-through electric gait from Kohn, which allows the operator to pass through the gate without getting out of or off of their vehicle, and (3) the Mighty Mule powered gate opener, which is designed for home, farm or ranch use on single or dual swing gates from 3.5 to 16 feet in length. Four examples of livestock latches are included, and also pictured: (1) a standard wrapped chain latch, (2) a Hop Lock Spring Loaded Latch from Duffy Manufacturing, which provides easy closure with positive locking, (3) a Quick Gate Latch from RAMMfence, which is easy to open with one hand, and (4) a Sure-Latch gate latch, which can also be opened with one hand.
