An Annual Conference to Advance the Use of Virtual Reality in the Treatment of Mental Disorders

By Wiederhold, Brenda K., PhD, MBA; Wiederhold, Mark D., MD, PhD; Psychiatric Services, Vol. 54, No. 9, pp. 1209-1210
Publication Date: September 2003

Article discusses the use of virtual reality and advanced technologies to help clients with both mental and physical disabilities. Virtual reality is used in medical and psychological practices around the world as a complement to traditional treatments. For example, phobias are treated effectively and confidentially in therapists’ office through the use of simulation, while other clients undergoing painful wound procedures are able to escape into a virtual world where they are distracted from pain. A growing network of physicians, psychologists, and researchers have continued to develop these research and therapy protocols.
