Grammatical Support for Sentence and Phrase Construction for Symbol Users

By Magnuson, Tina; Hunnicutt, Sheri; Assistive Technology - Shaping the Future: AAATE 2003 Conference Proceedings, Vol. 11, No. 1, pp. 267-271
Publication Date: 2003

Paper presents the work of the European Union World Wide Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) project, which includes the development of a language support model to assist people who communicate via symbols in electronic mail and chat environments. The module is composed of three functions: (1) symbol-to-text transformation rules, (2) ready-made reusable phrases, and (3) grammatical model sentences and phrases for semantic symbol substitution. A commercial program called Symbol for Windows has been the first platform for the linguistic support model. Symbol for Windows contains support for both face-to-face communication and written communication. Implications for future prototype evaluation are discussed.
