Customize Your Cane

By Ianuzzi, Jody W.; Future Reflections, Vol. 23, No. 1
Publication Date: Spring/Summer 2004

Article discusses the importance of customization for people who are blind or have low vision who use canes. The author uses a National Federation of the Blind telescoping cane with a variety of grips, including a steering wheel cover, golf grips, and tennis grips. The canes have a stylish look, and they are practical as a non-slip grip surface when the user is wearing gloves. Reflective tape for nighttime use is available in discount or hardware stores. The author recommends that people who use canes have a color option to choose from other than traditional white for colder months due to the fact that white canes are difficult for passers by to detect in the snow.
