Research and Practice: Measuring Assistive Technology Outcomes in Reading
By Edyburn, Dave, PhD; Journal of Special Education Technology, Vol. 19, No. 1, pp. 60-64Publication Date: Winter 2004
Article examines issues associated with measuring assistive technology (AT) outcomes in reading. Most often, tools that involve text to speech hold particular promise, as students are able to click on words or select portions of text and have the information read to them. Nine of these programs are listed: (1) CAST eReader, (2) Kurzweil 3000, (3) PDF Aloud, (4) Reading Bar, (5) ReadPlease, (6) TextHelp, (7) WordQ, (8) Write:Outloud, and (9) WYNN. The author contends that much more work is needed to determine the kinds of AT that enhance reading performance, and that the area of reading appears to be significantly behind in the development of measurement tools and procedures that will enable the profession to make definitive statements about the outcomes of technology-enhanced performance in reading.
