Setting a New Standard for Cushions; Industry Experts Prepare Wheelchair Seating Guidelines

By Park, Richard; HomeCare Magazine,
Publication Date: April 2001

Article discusses the Wheelchair Seating Standards Project, which has been conducted by the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America, in conjunction with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International Standards Organization (ISO). The creation of draft standards could lead to advancements in the wheelchair seating market. The standards would not only define ways to test wheelchair seating, but could also provide standardized reporting guidelines. Once completed, the draft standards will undergo a review by each participating organization. The goal is for both ANSI and ISO to accept the final standards and for the ISO to publish them. Manufacturers could then choose to follow or ignore the standards.
