Use of DynaVox Augmentative and Assistive Communication Device to Access PlayStation 2

By Aliani, Maureen, OTR/L, ATP; Giles, Sue, CCC-SLP; RESNA 27th International Annual Conference 2004: Technology & Disability: Research, Design, Practice, & Policy,
Publication Date: 2004

Paper intends to provide practitioners and consumers with simple procedures for utilizing the DynaVox 3100 and the DynaMyte 3100 to access PlayStation 2. PlayStation 2 is a video game entertainment unit with a DVD player produced by Sony Entertainment America. The DynaVox and DynaMyte 3100, which were designed by DynaVox Systems, are augmentative communication devices with infrared environmental control capabilities. The application of these systems with PlayStation 2 provides people who use alternative methods of communication with several user interface options, such as single switch scanning, direct selection, touch screen communication, or communication via head pointer. The authors contend that this is a fun and exciting means to provide independent recreational activity for people with disabilities, and an excellent means of practicing the use of assistive technology and improving visual motor coordination.
