A-Communicator: Towards Accessible Whiteboarding

By Richards, Jan; Kowaliw, Taras; RESNA 27th International Annual Conference 2004: Technology & Disability: Research, Design, Practice, & Policy,
Publication Date: 2004

Paper introduces the A-Communicator, which is an instant messenger program that includes a Whiteboard, which is a synchronous drawing area that allows users to draw two-dimensional figures. Whiteboards had previously been inaccessible to people who are blind or have low vision who use screen readers, but the Java Swing language employed in the A-Communicator makes Whiteboard drawings accessible by assigning automatically generated names in a combo box immediately underneath the drawing. Objects may be selected through a pointer tool via mouse selection. The A-Communicator also includes keyboard accessibility drawing functionality.
