The Internet Evolution

By Klebine, Phil; Pushin' On, Vol. 22, No. 1, pp. 1-3
Publication Date: 2004

Article focuses on assistive technology (AT) for people with spinal cord injury (SCI) found through Internet research, including aids for daily living, manual wheelchairs, and powered wheelchairs. People with limited mobility could utilize the RC200 Remote Controlled Speakerphone from Ameriphone, which features a wireless remote for dialing and a hands-free speakerphone. Additional accessories are available, including a headset, lapel microphone, pneumatic switch, and a pillow switch that can be operated via head, chin, arm, or other body movement. Reaching devices such as the Cripper and Vee-Zee C5 Reacher are also discussed. The Cripper is a reaching/gripping device designed for people who have only wrist function, such as people with C6 spinal cord injuries or below. The Vee-Zee C5 was designed for people with C5 spinal cord injuries, and is operated via a T-shaped toggle lever. The grasp can be operated by mouth if a cord is attached to the toggle. Another device called the Port-A-Bar utilizes suction cup technology to attach grab bars to a fiberglass shower or tub. The device is portable, so it can be used when traveling. The authors recommend http://www.WheelchairNet.org for anyone shopping for a wheelchair or a related accessory, such as a push-assist device. The Independence iGlide and the E-Motion are examples of push-rim power assist systems. When users propel their manual wheelchairs, motors attached to the push rim help to propel the chair. Another type of push-assist device is a lever-activated drive and braking system called the Wijit, in which levers are built into specialized wheels to augment pushing power. A modern lightweight wheelchair called the Endeavor is described as well. The Endeavor features a compact design, rigid frame, and a forward-folding collapse mechanism with adjustable back, seat and axle positions. The wheelchair can collapse for storage in the overhead compartment in a train or airplane. A number of powered wheelchairs are described, including the VERTRAN from Permobil. The VERTRAN is a front-wheel drive wheelchair with a standing option, and it features one of the lowest seat-to-floor heights found in any powered wheelchair. People who enjoy outdoor activities might prefer Permobil’s TRAX, which is a rear-wheel drive powered chair with four-wheel independent suspension and a unique adjustable wheelbase length for added stability. The Independence iBOT 3000 Mobility System is also described, which features a four-wheel drive system that can climb stairs and balance on two wheels in a standing position. The author recommends that people consult with others via Internet message boards for additional AT feedback.
