Mastering Mobility - The Present & Beyond

By Ball, Marty; Sports 'N Spokes, Vol. 30, No. 2, pp. 16-17
Publication Date: March 2004

Article provides suggestions on how consumers can choose the best wheelchair to suit their individual needs. The author discusses a number of consumer resources, including Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) gyms, medical equipment dealerships, rehabilitation clinics, the Internet, and people who are experienced in wheelchair use. Gyms at VAMCs often have access to many different types of wheelchairs, while medical equipment dealerships can often have manufacturer’s representatives provide free demonstrations of their products. Most high-quality rehabilitation centers also have access to the latest styles of chairs and seat cushions. The Internet is a good starting point for an initial search, as are people who are experienced with wheelchairs. Wheelchair evaluation and assessment strategies are discussed.
