Winter Wonder

By Sports 'N Spokes, Vol. 28, No. 8, p. 42
Publication Date: December 2002

Article describes a prototype system that prevents wheelchair wheels from spinning on snow and ice in the winter. The system utilizes 12 “S” hooks, six 12-foot pieces of rope, 12 pieces of plastic tube to fit over the S hooks, and two 11-inch bungee cords. Polypro hollow-braid rope is used, as it is inexpensive and, unlike chain, can be used indoors. The rope is simply wound around the wheel’s tread in order to provide extra needed traction in adverse conditions. The system reportedly works well on pavement as well. Contact and pricing information are included.
