StarOffice 7

By Caviness, Rochelle; Large Print Reviews,
Publication Date: May 2004

Article provides a review of StarOffice 7 in terms of its usability for people who are blind or have low vision. StarOffice 7 is a suite of office application similar to the standard editions of Microsoft Office or Corel’s WordPerfect Office, as it includes word processing, spreadsheet, web publishing, drawing/graphics and photo editing programs. Accessibility features include the ability to utilize all of the applications via keyboard input, extensive short cut key, and a user interface that allows for simple screen resizing. StarOffice 7 also supports the ZoomText Screen Magnifier versions 7.11 and higher, Braille display devices, and the Galileo and Virgo 4 screen reader programs. The author did find, however, that the application did not fully support Freedom Scientific’s JAWS 5.0 screen reader, as the program was found to repeat some lines of text. Magic 8.02 screen magnification program, also from Freedom Scientific, was found to work well with StarOffice 7. Overall, the author found that most of the applications in the StarOffice 7 suite were fully accessible and easy to use by people who are blind or have low vision.
