ESP Softworks: Computer Games for the Blind and Visually Impaired

By Caviness, Rochelle; Large Print Reviews,
Publication Date: December 2003

Article discusses computer games designed by ESP Softworks for people who are blind or have low vision. Seven titles were offered at the time the article was written: (1) Change Reaction, (2) ESP Whoopass, (3) Alien Outback, (4) Monkey Business, (5) ESP Pinball, (6) Shell Shock, and (7) DynaMan. Despite a title page that is displayed on the computer screen, all of the games are played using only one’s hearing. The author was impressed with the playability of all the games, as the sounds were realistic and simple to follow. Different objects have different sounds, while high-quality backup noises help to create a unique sense of environment in every game. The author recommends that a sound card be installed before playing these games, while sound quality is much better if the user has a set of external speakers attached to his or her computer. The games are highly recommended for people who are blind or have low vision as well as fully sighted people who wish for a unique video game experience.

Assistive Products Discussed: ALIEN OUTBACK
