By Russo, James; Sukojo, Andiputranto; Helal, Abdelsalam (Sumi); Davenport, Rick; Mann, William C.; Toward a Human-Friendly Assistive Environment, Vol. 14, pp. 122-135Publication Date: 2004
Paper discusses the SmartWave system, which is a microwave-based cooking system that makes it easy for older people with visual, cognitive, hearing, or physical disabilities to enjoy a meal without having to read cooking instructions or press microwave buttons. The SmartWave is integrated with smart home technology, and it integrates a commercially available microwave oven with an RFID reader that allows the microwave to be automatically programmed with the correct cooking instructions. The user only needs to remove the food package from the freezer, place it on the counter next to the microwave, and the system walks the user through the process via visual and auditory cues. The system then starts the cooking process once the food is placed inside the microwave. The SmartWave was created by researchers at the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Aging at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
