Success Story: Alfred Calderon

By Mansfield, Jennifer; AT Journal, Vol. 111, No. 1
Publication Date: June 2005

Article discusses the plight of Alfred Calderon, who faced difficulty finding accessible transportation in the community of Mentone, California when he switched to a powered wheelchair. Calderon contacted assistive technology advocate Mark Gomez of Rolling Start, which is a Riverside, California independent living center. Transportation in the city of Mentone has always caused problems for people with disabilities because of its lack of accessible public transportation options, which forced Calderon to find his own accessible transportation. Gomez was able to supply Calderon with a van with a powered chair lift, which was donated by the Associate Dean for California State University in San Bernardino. The van also had features such as hand controls, a cut floor, and a wheelchair braking and control system.
