Tracking my Head - Head Trackers Compared: A User's Perspective

Article provides a comparison of various head tracking applications, which can be used to replace mouse functions for people with disabilities that prevent them from using a standard mouse. Six head tracking hardware applications are discussed: (1) HeadMouse for Portables and (2) HeadMouse Extreme from Origin Instruments, (3) IntelliMouse from Microsoft, (4) SmartNAV from R.J. Cooper, and (5) Tracker One and (6) Tracker Pro from Madentec. The author recommends the SmartNAV for people who are on a budget and are able to produce an invariable environment that is not too brightly lit. The HeadMouse extreme was rated the highest overall, as it proved to be superior to all the other devices. The author was very impressed with the application’s ability to reacquire the target smoothly and quickly once it is lost. Advice is provided regarding how to get maximum performance from these devices, as well as how to choose effective software applications with complementing features.
