Home Modifications: Essential but Difficult to Fund

By Waterland, Laura J.; AT Messenger , Vol. 12, No. 1, pp. 4-6
Publication Date: Winter 2004

Article discusses barriers to securing funds for home modifications. The author contends that states have an obligation under the Americans with Disabilities Act to provide services for people with disabilities in the least restrictive environment, though many gaps in service do still exist. One barrier is the lack of affordable, accessible housing, as it is often difficult for people with disabilities to find homes that meet many of their unique living requirements. This lack of housing often makes it difficult to impossible for people to move from institutions after inpatient rehabilitation, and it poses problems for people who wish to stay in their communities when they discover that they need accessible housing. A list of resources for people who require accessible housing is included.
