Innovation

By Nargelovic, John; PN: Paraplegia News, Vol. 59, No. 6, pp. 12-13
Publication Date: June 2005

Article discusses the modification of a commercially available shower/commode chair from Temco. The chair was modified to include the following four “must-haves” for shower/commode chairs: (1) the chair must have a wheel base that is long enough to include a foot rests; (2) the seat must be mounted high enough to clear the toilet; (3) the chair must have four casters so the user can maneuver it in all directions without assistance; and (4) the arms must swing up with rear-mounted hinges and positive locks when in the closed position. The author contends that manufacturers should consider these suggestions when developing shower/commode chairs for people with paraplegia.
