Paper discusses the second-generation Smart Power Assistance Module (SPAM), which was designed to provide independence and safe mobility to people with visual and physical disabilities. The SPAM system consists of pushrim-activated power-assist wheelchair hubs and a combination of infrared and sonar sensors for navigation assistance. The newest model features more reliable power-assist control and obstacle-avoidance algorithms, as was determined via an experiment in which the SPAM was propelled up and down a slight slope. A qualitative analysis of this experiment is included. This paper was presented at the 2005 annual conference of RESNA, the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America and is available on CD-ROM.
