Earmolds and Hearing Aid Shells: A Tutorial

By Pirzanski, Chester, BSc; Hearing Review, Vol. 13, No. 4, pp. 10-20
Publication Date: April 2006

Article is the first in a series of articles on impression-taking and the resultant earmold or earshell, which the author contends is one of the most problematic and critical components of the hearing aid fitting process. Recommendations for fitting professionals performing ear impressions and otoscopic examinations are included: (1) check for abnormalities, (2) determine oto-block size, (3) understand the anatomy of the individual ear canal, (4) understand the dynamic ear canal, and (5) check for landmarks in the canal. A description of the technology utilized in the impression-taking process is included.
