ConnSENSE Review: Virtual Pencil-Arithmetic

By Kardos, Margaret, OTR/L, ATP; ConnSENSE Bulletin, Vol. 8, No. 2
Publication Date: May 2006

Article provides a review of Virtual Pencil-Arithmetic from Henter Math, which is a Windows-based software program that allows students to solve math problems on a computer, including those that include fractions and decimals. The program displays the problem vertically, the way it might be presented on a math worksheet. Virtual Pencil-Arithmetic has two modes: (1) Tutor mode, and (2) Test mode. The Tutor mode can be used as a teaching and learning support, while the Test mode can be used for independent study. When working in the Tutor mode, arithmetic problems are input as a horizontal equation and are transformed into vertical alignment once the entry has been completed. This application provides visual cues for students who are just learning the concept of regrouping or who have difficulty remembering to carry over digits to the next column. Students can make a limited number of mistakes, but will not continue to step through the problem once the limit has been reached. This feature can allow students to learn through experience, yet it provides somewhat of a safety net for students who are trying to learn new skills. The Test mode has no cues or hints, which allows the student to solve the problem independently. The location of the cursor can be read aloud, however, to support individuals with visual disabilities so that they can track their progression. The author gives the program a grade of “A”, as she contends that it is a must for students who have difficulty with mathematics and writing, as well as students with visual disabilities.
