Chatting, Sharing, Laughing: Kids Make Connections in PatchWorx's Secure Online Community

By Middleton, Teresa; CSUN Technology and Persons With Disabilities Conference - 2002,
Publication Date: 2002

Paper discusses PatchWorx, which is a secure web-based online community for children who are facing illness and disability who feel isolated and alone because they are homebound. PatchWorx provides children with the opportunity to share experiences, learn from each other, and make friends with common interests. The online community also offers leadership opportunities for young people to perform specific roles within the community, which can boost their self-esteem. The need for a site like PatchWorx is supported by research that identifies the coping skills necessary for children with disabilities to participate in activities that promote positive socio-emotional development. This paper was presented at the 2002 California State University at Northridge Technology and Persons With Disabilities Conference.
