Every Student Reads in the Divergent Classroom

Paper provides a brief overview of technology that can be used to promote the development of early reading skills of students with disabilities. Emergent readers can benefit from additional information from pictures, symbols, sounds, and additional words, while a number of software programs designed specifically for people with reading disabilities are discussed. The author contends that the best software for emergent readers features speech, and highlights words as they are read. UkanDu Little Books is an example of this type of software, as it also includes pictures and animations that illustrate key words and concepts. Similar applications are listed, including Start-to-Finish Books, BuildAbility, and Write:Outloud.
