E-Learning: The Challenge for the Blind and Visually Impaired

By Geoffrey, Catherine; Mabilleau, Philippe; CSUN Technology and Persons With Disabilities Conference - 2002,
Publication Date: 2002

Paper focuses on accessibility issues in distance education, or e-learning. The author advocates for accessible e-learning software designs, as a wide range of presentation formats can yield major barriers for people with visual disabilities. Video or multimedia animation requires additional information such as audio description, while text presented in inaccessible formats such as the PDF format also calls for alternative presentation. Online security protocols are often inaccessible for people with visual disabilities, as screen readers could read private passwords out loud, while they may not be able to decipher security codes.
