Overcoming Two Obstacles: Technology for Students Who Are Deaf-Blind
By Pasupathy, Meenakshi; Future Reflections, Vol. 25, No. 2Publication Date: Summer 2006
Article focuses on assistive technology applications utilized by a 16-year-old male student who is deaf-blind. The student uses a BrailleNote from Humanware, which is an electronic note-taking device that is available with both a Braille and a QWERTY keyboard. The student uses the QWERTY version, which provides output in Braille, print, or speech. The application has a refreshable Braille display so that he can read his work in Braille while inputting it via QWERTY keyboard. The student also uses a manual Perkins Brailler, which directly embosses the Braille code that is typed by the user. For math class, the student uses a Sci-Plus large-display scientific calculator from Sight Enhancement, as he does have enough usable vision to make good use of some large print materials.
