Validity and Reproducibility of the Jamar Dynamometer in Children Aged 4-11 Years

By Van Den Beld, Willeke A.; Van Der Sanden, Gitty A.C.; Sengers, Rob C.A.; Verbeek, Andre L.M.; Gabreels, Fons J.M.; Disability and Rehabilitation, Vol. 28, No. 21, pp. 1303-1309
Publication Date: November 2006

Study conducted to evaluate the validity and reproducibility of the Jamar dynamometer in 67 children ages 4 to 11 with muscular disorders. The participants’ maximum grip strength was measured with the Jamar, which is a calibrated hydraulic device. The children were asked to squeeze the device as hard as possible with one hand while their results were compared with those of a control group who did not have muscular disabilities. The Jamar dynamometer was found to be a good, but not completely accurate test for muscular disabilities. Implications for future research are discussed. This research was conducted at the Departments of Rehabilitation Medicine and Interdisciplinary Child Neurology Center, Pediatrics, and Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University Medical Center in Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
