Getting Into Balance

By Sherlock, O.T.R./L., Jennifer, Cheyenne Mountain Rehabilitation, Colorado Springs, CO.; Rehab Management, Vol 9, No 1
(Pages: 33-38) Publication Date: December/January 1996

This article describes balance problems and their treatment. A section on "technology aids and assessments" discusses the use of platform posturography, where the patient stands on a platform that can tilt forward or backward. Sensors connected to the platform record the patients postural sway and automatic response to platform movement and ability to maintain balance, both with eyes open and eyes closed. Data is recorded on a personal computer. Evaluation of data from these devices enables better assessment and treatment of balance disorders, which can help prevent falls and maintain patient functional independence.
