By Edyburn, Dave L.; Focus on Exceptional Children, Vol. 32, No. 9, pp. 1-24
Publication Date: May 2000

Article reviewing research, policy, and practice relative to the use of assistive technology (AT) in special education by students with mild disabilities. It is organized in four sections: a brief overview of the common characteristics of mild disabilities and an examination of the potential of AT for individuals with disabilities; an examination of requirements for considering AT as part of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and resources that facilitate the process; a discussion of new directions that offer promise for capturing the potential of AT for students with mild disabilities; and an outline of the implications of this work for research, policy, and practice. The SETT Framework, designed to facilitate gathering and organizing data to enhance AT decision making, and Wile's Model of Human Performance Technology are illustrated. Assistive technology products discussed include Quicktionary Reading Pen and Quicktionary II from Wizcom Technologies; Speaking Ace, Spelling Ace, and Handwriting Ace from Franklin Electronic Publishers; WYNN Wizard and WYNN Reader from Freedom Scientific Learning Systems Group; eReader from CAST; WYNN; Inspiration from Inspiration Software; ViaVoice from IBM; Dragon NaturallySpeaking and DragonDictate from ScanSoft; Write:Outloud from Don Johnston; Voice Express from MacSema; Talking Text from Scholastic Software; TrackStar; PowerPoint; and Hyperstudio.
