Scientists Developing Mind-Controlled Wheelchair

Paper discussing Swiss and Spanish scientists’ development of a mind-controlled wheelchair that could give people with paralysis a new sense of independence The system was designed by Jose Millan of the Dalle Molle Institute for Perceptual Artificial Intelligence in Martigny, Switzerland, scientists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, and the Center for Biomedical Engineering Research in Barcelona, Spain. The mind-controlled wheelchair is expected to utilize electrodes embedded in a skullcap worn by the wheelchair user, which would transmit messages from the mind to a computer through a wireless link. Built-in intelligence preventing collisions is included in the wheelchair. Scientists were testing the system at the time the article was written.
