Earmuffs: A Primer
By Witt, Brad, MA; Hearing Review,Publication Date: March 2007
Article focuses on the use of earmuffs for hearing protection, as they do offer some advantages not found in earplugs. The biggest advantage to using earmuffs is the ease of obtaining a proper fit, while they also yield more obvious advantages such as added warmth. Another advantage to earmuffs is that they can be fit over hearing aids. Amplification features can also be found in electronic earmuffs, as microphones mounted on the earcups feed a signal to an amplifying circuit with a built-in noise limiter. Active Noise Reduction earmuffs can also be used, as they utilize phase-reversing circuitry to cancel much of the incoming sound energy.
