Actuator Provides the Power to Move

By Medical Design Technology, Vol. 10, No. 1, p. 38
Publication Date: January 2006

Article focuses on the use of actuation systems for wheelchairs designed by Elyria, Ohio’s Invacare Corporation. Actuation systems play a vital role in wheelchair design, as Invacare created a powered legrest that utilizes SKF’s CAT 21 linear actuator. The legrests are part of a tilt-recline system, which moves and tilts users in various positions in order to relieve pressure that is created by sitting in the same position for a long period of time. The CAT 21 actuator has a high load capability in a small package, as its small design falls in line with the trend of having a lower height from floor to seat. Figures regarding the CAT 21 actuator’s lifting capabilities are included.
