Caning the Terrain
By McCarl, Carol M.; Dialogue: A World of Ideas for Visually Impaired People of All Ages, Vol. 45, No. 2, pp. 22-26Publication Date: March-April 2006
Article on the different types of travel cane for use by blind persons and the activities and terrain for which they are appropriate. The author writes about rigid and folding canes with pencil or roller tips. When going out, she always carries a white cane with red tip to identify herself as blind. She uses a pencil tip when she expects limited walking, and a roller tip when she plans more extensive walking. When hiking on a steep trail with a guide, she holds one end of a rigid cane with her left hand while the guide holds the other end of the cane to lead, and she continues to use the roller tip cane with her right hand. She uses an old telescoping cane around ther house. For travel, she always carries a spare, and she always keeps one or two near her bed when she sleeps. Many individuals with low vision use lightweight identification canes, and for individuals who need a white cane that provides support, there is the VIP Support Cane from Ambutech. The article ends with a resource list that includes Ambutech, California Canes, and Revolution Enterprises.
