A Balancing Act: Cycling Tips for Amputees

By Active Living Magazine, Vol. 15, No. 1, pp. 22-23
Publication Date: Spring/Summer 2007

Article advising amputees on the selection and maneuvering of a bike. Considerations for selecting a bike include proper frame and seat height, a seat model for leg amputees that accommodates the prosthetic socket, and pedals that accommodate prosthetic limbs, such as toe clips, straps or riding shoes; the BeBop SPD (Shimano Pedaling Dynamics) pedal is recommended (www.bebop.com). Advice is offered on learning to balance a bike when stopping, practicing clipping in and out of pedals, and starting on hills. Brief reviews are appended of various bikes and bike accessories for amputees: The Freerider Bike, a bicycle with a special landing gear; custom-built Freedom Concepts bikes; the electric-assist Freedex; the hand-pedaled Top End Force from Invacare; the Duet, a wheelchair-bike tandem; and the Criterium handlebar adapter. Also appended is information on Mountain Men & Women, a website for amputee mountain-biker and cycling enthusiasts.
