Zen and the Art of Portable Players: A Look at the Zen Stone

Review of the Zen Stone, a portable player by Creative Labs. The device, which is 2.1 x 0.5 x 1.4 inches in size and weighs 0.7 ounces, has no screen and does not require iTunes to transfer files. It plays MP3 and WMA files, as well as material from Audible.com. Its system requirements are Windows XP, an Intel Pentium III 1 GHz PC, an AMD Duron 1 GHz or better processor, at least 128 MB RAM, and 170 MB free hard-drive space. The Zen Stone comes with a set of earbud headphones, a USB 2.0 cable, and a manual which can also be downloaded as part of the Creative Media Lite software package. It features a rechargeable battery. The article offers advice on setup; transferring music via Creative Media Lite interfaced with JAWS scripts or Window-Eyes, Windows Explorer, or Windows Media Player; downloading and playing material from audible.com through Audible Manager; and navigating through audible content.
