Makeover Tears House Down, Builds Another in a Week

By Special Living Magazine, pp. 26-33
Publication Date: Spring 2008

Article features a wheelchair-accessible home built for an LAPD officer who was disabled from gunshot wounds. The Redondo Beach, California, home was constructed with the help of 700 volunteers for a segment on the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” television program. The house, which replaced a two-bedroom home that would have needed major renovation for accessibility, has an open floor plan and hardwood floors to make it easy to maneuver a wheelchair. The countertops, oven, and dishwasher in the kitchen are at accessible height, and the range has space below it to accommodate a wheelchair. Other accessible features of the home include a roll-in shower and front-loading side-by-side washer and dryer. The home also features therapeutic devices including a whirlpool spa on the patio and a workout room with exercise equipment.
