Hearing Aid Compatibility Videos: Choosing a Cell Phone That Works for You

Video series developed to help consumers choose hearing aid compatible cell phones. Produced by the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Wireless Technologies (Wireless RERC) and CTIA – The Wireless Association, the 5-part series helps wireless consumers who use hearing aids to identify and choose a hearing-aid compatible (HAC) wireless device that meets their needs. Each video features subtitles. Part 1 through 3 present information regarding HAC and wireless devices as told by a certified audiologist. Part 1 (40 min, 30 sec) explains hearing-aid compatibility and the compatibility ratings scale; it also offers informational web resources. Part 2 (3 min 40 sec) discusses how to use HAC ratings to choose a wireless device, identifies cochlear-implant compatibility issues and describes activating the T-coil mode, and discusses different carrier/service provider technologies. Part 3 (3 min, 45 sec) demonstrates clamshell and candybar cell-phone styles as well as ringtones, vibration mode, texting and e-mail, and accessories such as neck loops and Bluetooth technology. Part 4 and 5 demonstrate a “try and buy” process between a sales associate and a consumer at an actual wireless carrier’s retail store, with Part 4 (3 min, 40 sec) determining the carrier or sevice provider’s return policy and identifying HAC ratings on display cards; and Part 5 (5 min, 30 sec) showing the testing of various phones and accessories in the store and choosing the most suitable model.
