Reinventing the Wheel

By PN: Paraplegia News, Vol. 62, No. 9, pp. 26-27
Publication Date: September 2008

Article describes the Crossbreed, a folding wheel for wheelchairs. The wheelchair-specific model of the Crossbreed is based on the design of an original version developed for road bikes to make them more transportable and storable in small spaces. The Crossbreed wheelchair wheel, in the prototype stage at the time the article was written, features an integrated push rim and easy-to-use locking lever. The inventor of the wheel anticipates that a wheelchair fitted with the Crossbreeds could be as high-performance as those sporting conventional wheels, yet fold up small enough to fit into an airplane’s overhead bin. Commercial models would initially be made from carbon-fiber composite, while the inventor plans for a range of future models to be available for various budgets and performance needs. More information about the Crossbreed can be found at http://www.duncfitz.co.uk.
