Wheelchair of the Future Takes On the Scooter

By Moore, Elizabeth Armstrong; CNET News,
Publication Date: August 29, 2009

Article describes an electric powered wheelchair and scooter combination. Developed by Japan’s Veda International Robot R&D Center, the Rodem is ergonomically designed. Because riders sit in a more upward position, taking a seat from behind and relaxing forward, the chair is both easier to mount and causes less strain on the lower back. This in turn reduces the burden on a caregiver helping the user onto the chair. The Rodem operates for about 4 hours per charge and can be driven at a speed of up to 2 miles per hour, using an accelerator resembling a joystick.
